What do you do in your free time?

August 24, 2017
It's 12:30 AM and I am so tired and sleepy now after a long day, but I just suddenly recalled some thoughts that I used to have probably a year ago.

Back in the Bay, I used to go out to meetup events a lot. I just wanted to meet with as many new people as I could - because meeting new friends widens your perspective. They bring you new ideas and thoughts that you normally don't have. As a friend I met in a hiking event put it, "I feel like meeting people too similar to me doesn't add anything to myself." I agreed.

I am only young once, and because I respect my youth and because of opportunity cost, I can only walk the one path that I chose. Consequently, it's so exciting to listen to other young friends' journeys. It is as if I walked their paths in the stories. What about a person who spent 4 years working unpaid non-profit job? What about a friend who spent her high school years making movies? What about an engineer so passionate about music that she volunteered teaching children piano for free?

In the process of meeting new people, I made a lot of friends, had a lot of fun outings, and developed some beliefs and ideals which I will discuss in some later posts. :P

Fast forward to the present in NYC, I spend more time reading than meeting new people. I just feel an urgency of having to learn as much and as fast as I could so that I don't run into any pitfalls that might possibly derail my track.

I am not sure if this is for the better or for the worse. The good thing is I feel almost as hungry as when I just graduated. On the other hand, the bad thing is my social skill has deteriorated a lot, to the point I felt awkward socializing at VTNM5 meeting new people hahaha.

Back in California, when meeting new friends, I just loved to ask them, "What do you do in your free time?"

This question almost immediately gave me a good picture of a person, because I (still) believe that, what you do in your free time defines yourself.

I wanted to know what people put above distractions such as Netflix and Facebook.
I wanted to know what people aspired so much that they would stay up until 2AM in the morning trying to get done.
I wanted to know what drove a person, after a tiring 8-hour workday, to still pick up herself to work on.
I wanted to know what activity gave people happiness, after all the frustrations that might have happened earlier in the day.

Unfortunately, I forgot to give this question to my new friends that I have met recently.

For myself, it depends from time to time, but these days I read a lot in my free time, and explore the city over the weekend. Last year I mostly spent time learning music and maybe did some yoga. Honestly, last year I did so many random things that if you were asking me what I was doing, I wouldn't know where to begin.

So, what do you do in your free time?

PS: Admittedly, as an argument from Andrea, what you do for a living also defines you, but lots of people don't like their jobs and only work for money haha.
